It’s finally Spring! The sun is shining, the birds are chirping and the flowers are starting to bloom. It’s a time of renewal and beauty. Look around your home. Not quite so beautiful? It might be a good time to tidy up your place! There’s something cathartic about Spring Cleaning. You’re symbolically cleaning out the darkness and dust of the long winter and preparing to welcome the brightness and clarity of summer! <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn the days before electric lighting, central heating and sleek modern stoves, homes were lit and warmed and food was cooked by fire. That meant dirty smoke in the house from burning whale blubber lamps and coal stoves all winter. By springtime, the house was covered in a layer of soot! Luckily, technology takes the soot out of the equation for most homes. But the urge to clean each spring is still as strong as ever. And if you are going to be cleaning, why not use products that are good for your health AND the environment?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nThere’s no better way to know your cleaning products are safe than to know exactly what’s in them. And the best way to do that is to make them yourself! There are plenty of home remedies for cleaning that have stood the test of time and are guaranteed to get the job done. For eco-friendly Spring Cleaning, try a few of these recipes. Your lungs, skin, and the Earth will thank you! <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nBowl-o-Rama<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nWe’re starting with everyone’s least favorite chore: cleaning the toilet. But it doesn’t have to be such a task! Get rid of your harsh chemical cleaners with harmful acids and opt for a little elbow grease and a dash of science. Start by spraying a layer of distilled white vinegar over the surface of the toilet. If you want to deodorize while you’re at it, try adding a favorite essential oil to the vinegar. Once coated, sprinkle some baking soda around the bowl and watch it foam. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nRemember the baking soda\/vinegar volcanoes from grade school? Now we’re putting that foaming action to use by lifting away dirt and stains. Scrub the baking soda with a toilet brush until it’s clean and shiny. For stubborn stains, like a ring at the waterline, try using a pumice stone. Once clean, use a cloth to wipe the lid, seat, bowl and exterior of the toilet. Now your porcelain throne is sparkling clean and ready to go!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nNot Scratching the Surface<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nHaving an all-purpose surface cleaner on hand can be a life saver. From small spills to deep cleaning, it’s clutch to have a spray bottle at the ready at all times. This eco-friendly mixture can clean, sanitize, and deodorize and have you back to cooking in no time. Simply fill a spray bottle with 2 cups of water, a half cup of vodka (the cheap stuff works just fine!) or rubbing alcohol, and 5-6 drops of your favorite dish soap. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe best part of this mixture is that it has the cleaning power of the soap and the antibacterial qualities of the alcohol. If a mess has been sitting a while or is sticky, try letting the cleanser sit for 10 minutes before wiping it up. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nA Streak-Free Shine<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nPerhaps one of the most satisfying things to clean is a dirty window. As you remove the grime, the light streams in and brightens every room! And cleaning windows and mirrors with this concoction can be a cinch. In a spray bottle, mix one cup of both rubbing alcohol and water, and add a tablespoon of vinegar. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor a streak free clean, it’s important to use the right wiping tool. Cotton rags or towels will leave lint, and paper towels will leave lint AND<\/i> are a waste. For cleaning glass, opt for a microfiber towel. Or if you want to carry on an age-old tradition, try plain old black and white newspaper crumpled into a ball. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
