This year, we will be celebrating the 243rd birthday of the United States! The 4th of July is one of the biggest national celebrations of the year. From the food to the decorations and everything in between, here is your Morguard guide to hosting the ultimate 4th of July blowout.
The best thing about decorating for Independence Day is that you already have a built-in color scheme! The good old red, white and blue can be displayed in nearly limitless ways, and as the 4th gets closer, you will find it easier to find decorative elements in these colors. This doesn’t mean you have to buy every flag and bunting you can find. You can create fun and unforgettable decorations right in your Morguard apartment home without breaking the bank.
Make some patriotic hearts using red, white and blue felt or cloth, some cotton stuffing, and white thread. First, cut pairs of heart shapes out of the felt. Then sew two heart shapes together, making sure to leave an opening at the point of the hearts. This is where you will put in the stuffing. Stuff the heart as much as you like, then finish sewing up the points. Repeat the process, creating several stuffed hearts and hang them in a line from some twine using wooden clothespins. It’s that easy!
While some may set the tone for their party with the marches of John Philip Sousa, your guests might get tired of that after a while. A good playlist can make or break a party. This is your chance to feature some of America’s best artists from throughout the years. Maybe put together a playlist with a song by a band or musician from each state. Or take a tour through the great American songbook with classic crooners like Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, or Ella Fitzgerald. Or sample some of the great American contributions to world music, like jazz, country western, or hip-hop. With all the great music that has come out of America over the years, the sky’s the limit!
Red, White & Blue Food
When it comes to grub on Independence Day, you can’t go wrong with the classics. Hamburgers, hot dogs, steaks, chicken wings, skewers, corn on the cob… Basically, if it can be grilled, it’s a good choice! One of the most important parts of the 4th of July meal is dessert. This is a day of celebration so calories don’t count, right? One of the coolest ways to wow your guests is with a red, white and blue striped layer cake. Start out with your favorite white cake mix and make three batches. Use food coloring to dye one red and one blue, while leaving the third batch white. Bake and cool the cakes, then stack them up into a colorful layer cake. Finally, frost the whole thing and top with patriotic sprinkles, berries, or any topping you like. Voila! A 4th of July dessert fit for a president!
