We’re in a new year, a new decade and a new opportunity to grab life by the horns and take charge. With New Year’s in the rearview mirror, it’s time to tackle your resolutions and make this your most productive year yet. Common resolutions include improving organizational skills, starting or finishing a big project and general self-improvement like consistent physical fitness. There are thousands of life coaches, life hacks and life gurus, but self-betterment ultimately boils down to maintaining good habits, as well as setting and accomplishing one small, achievable goal at a time. Big changes may seem almost impossible, while smaller, incremental goals can be easily attained. This year, try making small changes that, together, will make a big impact. Here are some easy first steps to get you started.


Get Organized


You know that feeling of climbing into a freshly-made bed when the sheets are crisp and warm and it feels clean and safe? There is nothing better than starting with a clean slate. Step one down the path to goal completion is having a clear vision and an orderly starting place. If you are planning to write the next great American novel, it might be hard to begin if your writing space is in chaos. Take some time to organize your workspace so that there are no distractions. Perhaps you’ll want to go with the Marie Kondo method, or maybe you’ll opt for a more Spartan aesthetic and just get rid of everything that’s cluttering up your literal or figurative workspace. Whatever frees your mind to focus on the goal at-hand, that’s the best route to take!


The Time is Now


When it comes to accomplishing a goal, “tomorrow” is rarely a good starting point; it’s a constantly-moving goal line that often seems out of reach. The most successful people got that way not by procrastinating, but by choosing to start making changes now. Don’t say you’ll start your new eating plan or begin a project on Monday. There will always be another Monday, and it will become easier and easier to just say, “well, maybe next time.” When it comes to the best time to start, the answer is almost always “now”. 


Don’t Beat Yourself Up


The path to success is rarely an easy one. There will be setbacks. Sometimes you’ll fall, and it’s easy to feel like a failure. That’s OK! The key is to not let it get you down. As the old saying goes, “when you fall off a horse, you just have to get right back on.” But more importantly, you have to learn from that fall. Failure is a crucial part of success. Try not to think of slip-ups as a step back. Instead, think of them as lessons learned, opportunities for improvement and another step forward.
