The good news is that no matter the size of your home, you can create a system that works for you and your household. Here are our top tips for maximizing your space for productivity. 

Design an Optimal Workspace

 


The first step to successfully learning or working from home is setting up your workspace. While you might be comfortable working on the couch with a laptop at first, hunching over your screen for hours can lead to an aching back and poor focus. Instead, find a place where you can sit for a majority of the day with good posture.


Since dining room tables and kitchen islands already provide an even surface and room to spread out, the kitchen or dining room is a natural place to set up your home workspace or classroom. 


Designate a Secondary Workspace

 


Some of the most innovative companies in the world harness the power of multiple workspaces to boost performance and employee satisfaction. Schools tap into these benefits, too, with field trips and outdoor lessons. 


Just because you’re at home doesn’t mean you can’t have multiple workspaces. It might be as simple as moving to the other side of the table, or moving to another room or your balcony. Standup desks and exercise balls are an easy way to make your workspace more dynamic. Have a phone meeting that doesn’t require you to be at your desk? Take the call while you go for a walk.


Create Workspace Reach Zones

 

Workspace reach zones are helpful in any workspace, and they can help you be efficient about space if multiple people are working at a shared table or desk. Setting them up is easy, with the rule of thumb being that the items you’ll use most often are closest to you. Other items are farther away in tiered zones depending on how often they’ll be used.


Make Time for Clean Up

 


It’s no secret that a tidy workspace is good for focus. This is especially true if your work station pulls double-duty as your eating, sleeping, or entertainment space. Save time and energy by budgeting a few minutes at the start and end of your day for cleaning up and preparing the space. Get young children involved by using the Clean Up Song as their cue to help out.  


Incorporate Transitional Activities 

 

If you struggle to decompress in the same space you’ve been working in, you may want to try incorporating transitional activities. Think of a few things that help you relax and schedule time for one or all of them at the end of your day. Maybe you read a book, go for a walk, or do some stretching. Consider your transitional activities a part of your regular routine and make it a priority.
