Here at Morguard, we’re devoted to making Earth a better place to live for us and all of our future generations. As a part of this goal, we hold ourselves to high standards. This year we are proud to announce our 2016 Sustainability Report, which demonstrates positive results across environmental, social and governance (ESG) indicators.

Practice Makes Perfect

First established in 2009, our sustainability program, Sustainable Morguard, has made great progress in conservation energy and reducing usage of resources. From 2010 to 2015, our property management teams achieved a 14% reduction in energy consumption, a 24% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a 19% reduction in water consumption.

In 2016, we furthered these achievements, and continued to reduce environmental impacts. We saw decreases in the following important environmental practices, saving an estimated $1.6 million in operating costs for office and retail tenants over a one-year period:

  • Energy consumption (2.8% reduction),

  • Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions (3.3% reduction),

  • Water consumption (1.1% reduction)

  • Waste to landfill (2.0% reduction)


Highlights For The Past Year

Although we’ve made progress in many areas towards sustainability, there are some we are particularly proud of. Take a look at the highlights of our 2016 Sustainability Report.


Greenhouse Gas

  • Reduced emissions by over 4050 metric tonnes in 2016, which is equivalent to eliminating the annual GHG emissions from over 750 passenger vehicles

Water Use

  • Reduced usage of over 21,000 m3 of water, which is the equivalent of 8.5 Olympic swimming pools


  • 12 LEED certified green buildings in operations

  • 18 BOMA BEST green buildings re-certified in 2016

Getting Involved In The Community

Morguard isn’t just about preserving the environment. We love to help out in our local communities, and participate in several community improvement projects, such as park and playground rebuilds, pedestrian walkways, bike paths and public spaces.

In 2016 we launched a national social cause marketing campaign with Big Sisters of Canada called BeYou. Taking place at our 21 owned and managed shopping centres in Canada, BeYou’s goal for the campaign was to increase self-esteem, personal growth and self-worth and empower young girls aged 9-16. Over 12,000 girls registered and participated in events across the country. We are proud of this program, and we’re hopeful that BeYou will provide long-term positive benefits in our local communities.
