Morguard Recognized with Three Awards for Leadership in Sustainability Initiatives
Morguard was recognized with three Leadership in Environmental Advancement Program (LEAP) Awards from Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP). The LEAP Awards recognize and celebrate excellence in energy performance and environmental sustainability by property management teams at exemplary sites.
Sustainability and Efficiency
As part of the greater community at each property, Morguard implements innovative environmental sustainability values in important areas such as energy and water efficiency, as well as strategies to divert organic waste. Healthy, efficient and conservation-modeled buildings, constructed to high environmental standards, are more energy conscious than traditional buildings, which appeals to tenants and the community as a whole.
Lisa Lafave, Senior Portfolio Manager at HOOPP, stated, "We congratulate the Morguard LEAP Award winners on their commitment to these sustainability values and their focus on tenant collaboration, sustainability innovation and building performance."
George Schott, President and Chief Operating Officer of Morguard spoke about Sustainable Morguard, the corporate-wide sustainability program, sharing that, "It takes collaboration and commitment to realize value for all stakeholders in healthy, resource-efficient, high-quality buildings."
As part of the LEAP Awards, Morguard was also recognized for excellence in three categories: tenant collaboration, sustainability innovation and building performance.
Beckta Dining & Wine Bar, Performance Court, Ottawa, Ontario
Morguard received the Tenant Leader: Retail Award for its collaboration with Beckta Dining & Wine Bar, housed within the LEED Gold Class A office tower. The objective of the joint initiative was to improve sustainability outcomes at the flagship restaurant by growing its own vegetables on-site and reducing waste. The initiative resulted in the establishment of a 1,000 SQ FT urban garden on the 7th floor outdoor terrace which today provides 10% of the restaurant's vegetables. In addition, the restaurant worked to maximize its composting and recycling programs by diverting approximately 88.1% of its waste. These achievements are being used as a model at other restaurants in the Morguard portfolio.
Coquitlam Centre, Vancouver, British Columbia
Morguard received the Sustainability Innovator: Stakeholder Engagement Award. This award recognized a multi-faceted campaign, Going Organic, which targeted retail tenants and visitors at the super-regional enclosed shopping center with a goal to reduce organic waste. The campaign resulted in a significant 619% improvement in the diversion of organic waste!
A tenant satisfaction survey later indicated that 95% felt that Coquitlam Centre is an environmentally responsible shopping center and nearly 90% stated they were "Satisfied or Very Satisfied" with the sustainable practices in place there.
Bonnie Doon Centre, Edmonton, Alberta
In order to achieve widespread reduction in water consumption at Bonnie Doon Centre, the Morguard property management team, in conjunction with its tenants, implemented several water efficiency initiatives ranging from active demand management to retrofits. As a result of this joint effort, the shopping center was recognized with the award for Water Winner: Retail based on an overall score of water intensity, water reduction and progress to water target.
Here at Morguard, sustainability is one of our core values and we feel honored to be recognized for our sustainability programs!
