We are now well into January, and New Year’s resolutions are statistically reaching their breaking point. According to Business Insider, 80% of resolutions fail by February and old habits begin to creep back in. At Morguard, we want to help you be your best self and keep up with your goals!
Stand Up for Yourself
Year after year, one of the most popular resolutions is to get in better shape. This can be a hard one to keep if your job requires a lot of sitting. Studies have shown that sitting for long periods at a time can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. It is important to take time each day to get your body moving. This can seem like a daunting task at first, but even small changes can make a big difference. Here are some simple stretches and exercises you can do at work to help stave off “sitting disease.”
It can be easy to lose track of time while working, but try to set aside just a few minutes every hour to stretch a bit and loosen up your muscles. Start by interlocking your fingers and reaching your arms toward the ceiling with your palms facing up. Imagine you are being pulled upward by a giant claw game like they have in arcades! Reach up for 10 seconds at a time, remembering to keep breathing. While reaching up, try slowly twisting side to side as far as you can. This will give your whole torso a nice stretch and get the blood flowing again.
People with dogs know the importance of taking their furry friend for walks, but it can be hard to remember to do the same for ourselves! Try to take just 5 minutes every morning and afternoon to go for a quick walk. Walk around the building, or even just around the office. Maybe make your next meeting a “walking meeting.” The benefits of walking even in small amounts are enormous. It will help with your circulation, mood, energy levels, and even productivity.
For a slightly more intensive office workout, throw in some simple moves from the gym right at your desk. Stand up and do some squats. Use the edge of your desk for some modified pushups. If you have a swiveling chair, do some oblique twists by holding the edge of your desk, keeping your shoulders facing forward, and twisting your chair back and forth.
Even small steps can lead to big results when it comes to moving your body at work. Be an advocate for your own wellbeing, and you will find yourself feeling better and working better!
